What Is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?
A Global Framework with a Local Focus
The International Baccalaureate is a globally recognized education framework that emphasizes: ➤ critical thinking ➤ strong communication skills ➤ problem-solving ➤ independent learning Rather than focusing only on memorization, IB encourages students to ask questions, make connections, and understand the “why” behind their learning. This approach helps prepare students for success in post-secondary education, careers, and life.
What Does “Modified IB” Mean at Prairie Rose?
A Flexible, Phased Approach
Prairie Rose Public Schools is introducing IB in a phased and flexible way. Instead of a full IB diploma program, students will participate in IB-aligned programming in Math and English, allowing them to benefit from IB teaching approaches while maintaining the flexibility of the Alberta curriculum. This approach allows students to: ➤ strengthen literacy and numeracy skills ➤ develop critical thinking and reasoning abilities ➤ experience IB-style learning without the pressure of a full diploma program ➤ keep pathways open for a variety of post-secondary and career options
How Does the Careers Component Fit?
Linked Through the South Alberta Flight Academy
At this time, the career-related component of IB programming is connected through the South Alberta Flight Academy. Students enrolled in the Flight Academy will participate in the IB Career-related framework alongside their aviation training, blending academic learning with hands-on, industry-focused experience. This creates a unique opportunity for Flight Academy students to: ➤ connect learning to real-world aviation careers ➤ develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork ➤ gain experience that supports future pathways in aviation, engineering, and related industries As the program evolves, Prairie Rose will continue to explore additional ways to connect IB learning with other career pathways that reflect student interests and community opportunities.
Who Is This Program For?
Motivated, Curious, Future-Focused Learners
The modified IB program is well-suited for students who: ➤ are curious and motivated learners ➤ want to strengthen their reading, writing, and problem-solving skills ➤ enjoy learning that goes beyond memorization ➤ are interested in future pathways, including university, college, trades, aviation, or industry ➤ are ready to challenge themselves in a supportive environment Students do not need to be straight-A students. The program is designed for learners who are willing to engage, ask questions, and grow.
What Can Families Expect?
Support, Balance, and Strong Preparation
Students participating in IB-aligned Math and English will: ➤ continue to meet Alberta Education curriculum requirements ➤ be supported by teachers using IB-informed instructional approaches ➤ develop strong communication, organization, and learning skills ➤ be well-prepared for a wide range of post-secondary and career options Support structures will be in place to help students succeed academically and personally.
