FAQ's for Families

Q: What does it mean that teachers votes in favour of strike action?

Teachers voted in June to give the ATA a “strike mandate.” This means that if they choose to take job action, they must give at least 72 hours’ notice before withdrawing their services. The vote remains valid for 120 days.

Q: What happens if the ATA goes on strike?

  • Prairie Rose and other school divisions will activate contingency plans.
  • Families and staff will be notified by email with clear instructions.
  • Updates will also be posted here as soon as information is confirmed.

Q: How does teacher bargaining work in Alberta?

There are two steps:

  • Central bargaining – Province-wide negotiations about salary and broad working conditions.
  • Local bargaining – Negotiations specific to Prairie Rose Public Schools after central bargaining concludes.

Q: Who is part of the ATA in Prairie Rose?

All certificated teachers are members of the ATA. This includes classroom teachers, principals, and vice principals.

Q: What can parents and families do to be prepared for possible strike action?

  • Stay informed – Check this webpage regularly and watch your email for official updates from Prairie Rose Public Schools.
  • Talk to your child – Reassure them that school will continue and we will keep families informed of any changes.
  • Plan ahead – While schools remain open, it may help to think about backup childcare or supervision in case of a temporary disruption.
  • Reach out – If you have questions, contact your school office for clarification.
